As a photographer getting published in a magazine is a big deal for me!
Not only did I get the cover of the magazine but also four photos in the feature. It's funny to see my work posted on another site or in this case a magazine (Models and MMA, October 2013 issue). For the longest time I struggled to find the right way to pose models and get the lighting right. To make my photos look like other ones I had seen was harder then I thought in some ways yet easier than I thought in others.
There is a photographer some of you may have heard of named Jared Polin aka Fro Knows Photo. The guy is hilarious yet an excellent photographer who presents photography to people in an easy to understand way. On one of his "RAW Talks" he had talked about if you want something then ask for it. I wanted to shoot in a certain location for a model shoot so I just asked thinking it would cost me, they said yes and didn't charge a dime! Then a country singer wanted a shoot in an old barn so we stopped at an old farm house and politely asked to use the barn. Once again the answer was yes and no cost, the farmer thought it would be cool to have a singer shot in his barn. After that there were a couple of bands I wanted to shoot so I tweeted to them (fastest way to reach celebrities and not go through agents or managers is on Twitter). Going back to the models and being published, you can only learn so much from books then actually doing and practising comes in. Luckily a good friend of mine and amazing Glamour Photographer Paul Venomous let me assist him and see how he did things. It was only after working with someone in the field I wanted to pursue that my photography got better to where I could start getting published. Jared Polin even said the same thing ( I believe) that assisting or being an apprentice is a great idea and can make a world of difference! To make a long story short if I can do it then so can everyone else. Have patience, practice photography often, know your camera, ask for things when you need them, assist another photographer if you can. Most importantly people who give up never accomplish anything. Here is my first cover photo.
